I've no idea who this group of women are or why so many of them are dressed in a similar style. You can play with explanations to your heart's content, and you will still probably come nowhere near a convincing answer. Even the most powerful artificial intelligence bots available can only say that they are "likely to be members of a women's society or club" That, however, is the beauty of old photographs - they pose questions but rarely provide answers. We start a new month on Sepia Saturday with a face - and what a face it is.  People sometimes talk about "reading a face", but if such a thing was possible, I suspect that you would find that this face was written in some obscure foreign language. There is a degree of strength there, and more than a dash of determination. Is there perhaps a smidgen of sadness? You can carry on reading all day and keep discovering new elements - that's the wonder of old photographs.
