Our celebration of special occasions continues with a presentation. I have no idea what the presentation was for: a retirement; an arrival; a promotion; an achievement ... who knows. That is the thing about old photographs, they only tell part of a story leaving it to shared history - or vivid imagination - to fill in the blanks. Sepia Saturday 745 : 12 October 2024

 

We are celebrating special times this month on Sepia Saturday and this week we have a celebratory cake. The photograph is from my own family collection but I must confess that I know neither what the occasion was, nor who the to ladies concerned were. It doesn't really matter, the image is a good one and it serves as an invitation to share your old photographs on (or off) the theme of Special Times. Share them by posting a post on or around Saturday 12th October and adding a link to the list below. And spare a moment to see what other special times are ahead of us.

October is our Special Times theme month here on Sepia Saturday. You can define "special times" in whichever way you want - our theme image this week is that very special time, a wedding - all you need is an old photograph to share. Sepia Saturday 743 : 28th September 2024

 

We end our Highs and Lows month on something of a low - but if you are going to be low down deep under the ocean, you are best dressed in a divers' suit. Sometimes when we look through our collections of old photographs, we come across those that simply defy explanation. Why did Aunty Miriam get photographed rider a turkey, why did Uncle George dress up as an elephant .... why did the actress Sarah Bernhardt have her photograph taken with a man in a diving suit? So this week you can bring us your odd, your unexplained, your curious, your divers, your actresses, your whatever you want. Just bring them on or around Saturday 28th September 2024 and add a link to the list below. And then, whilst you are decompressing, take a look at what is in store in October.

Sepia Saturday 742 : 21st September 2024

 

We are having a month of highs and lows here on Sepia Saturday and this week is a high. We are high in the sky building a bridge over the River Tyne in Newcastle in the United Kingdom. If you want to follow the theme you could go with bridges, with rivers, or with working high in the sky. You can always choose to ignore the theme and go with any old photo you want. All we ask is that you post your post on or around Saturday 21st September 2024 and add a link to the list below. Sepia Saturday 741 : 14th September 2024

 

We are travelling through the highs and lows of September here on Sepia Saturday and our particular take on the theme this week is a low in several senses of the word. There is nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia here and there, nothing wrong with the good old days .... but sending men (and women and in many cases, children) deep underground to dig coal and other minerals for long hours in dangerous conditions for meagre wages could never be seen as one of the high points of human achievement. Our theme photograph dates back to 1905 and shows the No 3 Galt Mine in Alberta Canada where coal was extracted from the earth in huge quantities. We are asking you to extract your old photographs from the bowels of your collection and share them with other lovers of old photographs on or around Saturday 14th September 2024 and add a link to the list below. It's a new month and a new theme - highs and lows. You can celebrate the theme however you want or ignore it entirely, the choice is yours. Our theme image for this week features a couple of Alpine skiers from almost a century ago, feeling high on the top of a mountain. Dear Sepians, This is the last of my postcards as this is the end of postcard month here on Sepia Saturday. This week our theme image shows a group of soldiers from the early twentieth century. Soldiers, sailors, airmen or any military group would fit in with the theme, or any picture postcard would. Whatever you choose just post your posts on or around Saturday 31st August 2024 and add a link to the list below. Dear Sepians, We continue with our postcard month here on Sepia Saturday and this week we are having a bit of a laugh. Most of us are familiar with these types of cartoons - these days you see them all the time on your social media feeds - and back in the early twentieth century they were an integral part of that pre-digital social media craze - the picture postcard. Share your laughs and share your smiles by posting an old image on or around Saturday 24th August 2024 and adding a link to the list below. Dear Sepians, Here we are enjoying the delights of the English seaside at Morecambe. Feel that refreshing breeze blowing straight off the Irish Sea rejuvenate your very being.  Dear Sepians, We are having a great time here on holiday. We've been to see that celebrated actress, Violet Vanbrugh who is appearing in a play at the end of the pier. Throughout July we have been on the sepia water and this week is your last chance to get out those old photographs of seaside, lakeside and rivers. Our theme photo this week features a woman in a rubber dinghy at Ostend back in the 1930s. You don't have to go to Ostend, nor do you have to get in a dinghy, all we are asking is that you share your old photographs on or around Saturday 27th July 2024 and add a link to the list below. And whilst you are at the seaside / lakeside / riverside you might want to buy a picture postcard so you can be ready for our next monthly theme - postcard memories.

We may not quite be on the water this week on Sepia Saturday, but we are the next best thing - on the sands. The seashore has been a magnet for children down the generations, with bucket and spade in hand, every child must feel a thrill when the seaside is in sight. Gone fishing .... on the water. Our monthly theme is "on the water" and this week we are on the water (or just next to it to be accurate) doing a spot of fishing. All we ask is that you go fishing in your collection of old photographs to see if you have anything that fits the theme. If whatever you fish out doesn't fit the theme, don't worry, we don't really have rules here on Sepia Saturday. Just post an old photo and share a few new thoughts and do it on or around Saturday 13th July 2024 and add a link to the list below.
