Sepia Saturday 131 : 23 June 2012
Today’s prompt features people enjoying themselves on the swing ride at the Hoppings Fair in Newcastle in the 1940s. The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle’s Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide with, and counter-attract the ‘Summer Race Meeting’ at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still enjoyed to this day. The image comes from Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums Photostream in Flickr Commons, where you can find many more wonderful photographs from the fair. I had a hard job choosing one for the prompt, but do go and have a look at the others if you have a moment. Those of us who like to theme our posts can take our pick from fairgrounds and pleasure park rides or other amusements, or you could even pick up the temperance connection. Has life been a ‘Roller Coaster Ride? Do you live in a ‘House of Fun’? or perhaps you have an ‘Aunt Sally’ immortalised in sepia. So come on don’t be ‘shy’, join us at the Sepia Saturday Fair this week by posting your contribution on or around Saturday 30th June and try to visit as many other fairgoers as you can to see what they’ve made of the prompt. Please leave a comment after linking to Mr Linky below. “Roll up, Roll up!”
Here’s a mini-banner for you to add to your post and links your readers back to Sepia Saturday. Enjoy your ride everybody!
Marilyn
For those who like to have advance warning of the next two prompts they are reproduced below.

Found some free wifi in Gibraltar, just enough to read the post. Great prompt Marilyn, just a shame I won't be able to join in. See you all on my return
I’m first....I hope the rest of you are following on!
Hi, my first post contains more postcards from Spokane and some family info. My second post is about growing up behind the fairgrounds in Eugene. Looking forward to seeing what you guys all came up with this week!

I have some old rides from the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition.
Well my post vaguely links to temperance and summer time fun. I hope you all are enjoying your summer time heat!
I keep hoping I'll have enough time to participate, but alas, not for at least a few weeks. Perhaps I can find time to check in on some of the posts.
Mine is short and sweet - just one of those days when there's a good picture but nothing to say.
Three fairs for you to savour.
The King of Fairs: The World's Fair!
How about the Los Angeles County Fair in my home town of Pomona, Calif.
Great theme/prompt this week. I'm in again, and I'm early(ish) again. I've picked up on the fair part of the theme showcasing a ride from the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition.
My state fair and my favorite part the World's Championship Horse Show.

Oh this was a great theme but I regret I've got nothing like it for this weekend. Instead something on a kind of belated Father's Day musical theme.
I'm a bit wordy this time around, and found actual family pictures to post!
I'm taking you to the park indeed, but the sepia part is NOT my own memories but from I girl I introduced you to previously.
:)~

Hi Alan, it was cool to see your smiling face pop in! Marilyn I'm happy to say I got back in time to put a post up for your round two! You are super-awesome-and-most wonderful for helping out! :)
I'm in to mainly honor one of our own this week.
My bandwidth issues continue so I may not be able to get around until next week to view other's posts.
Stop by and visit Luna Park at Coney Island, NY in 1903.
Unfortunately I have no sepia photos of the many fairs I have attended. Wanted to upload two videos from SWL my last attendance at a fair, had a spot of trouble, try again tomorrow. Sorry. I have entered some of my Sepia 131 contribution.
I'm sharing more photos from my grandfather's collection...this time while on board the S.S. Brazil on the way to America.
This triggered a fairground that now only remains in memory.
I'm not on theme this week...
A second stab at the theme - what comes around, goes around!
Well, finally I got those videos going! Wished I had some sepia pictures to contribute to this great theme.
I went with the theme "taking a ride". I've a read a few really good posts and look forward to getting to all of them.
What a creative meme. I've posted on the World's Fair of 1893.
Riding a merry-go-round and ponies on Belle Isle in Detroit with my sister in 1953.
