Sepia Saturday 330 : 14 May 2016

Our theme image this week shows a type-setter at work. It comes from the collection of the Netherlands National Archives and is part of their Flickr stream. Whatever type of old image you want to share for Sepia Saturday 330, just include it in a blog post, post your post on or around Saturday 14th May 2016 and then add a link to it on the list below. The chances are that the type-setter featured in this image will have had a full range of lead letters in the tray in front of him - everything from A to Z. 

This reminds me that we are nearing the end of our "theme within a theme" and the beginning of July will see a new set of theme images covering the period July - September 2016. The new images are all taken from old photographs which have been contributed to the Sepia Saturday Flickr Group. The images for July are based on my own old photographs whilst the ones for August are based on photographs contributed by other Sepians. I still need to put together theme images for September so if you have any images that you think might be suitable, just add them to the Sepia Saturday Flickr Group collection (and don't forget to make them copyright free so that we can use and circulate them).

Sepia Saturday 329 : 7 May 2016

If I could gather my flock around me for a moment, I would like to reveal the theme image for Sepia Saturday 329. Look at that calm and gentle stance, look at all that wool - and I am only talking about the shepherd! In addition you have a sheep, a dog, a crook (I can think of several of my relatives who could fit into that as a theme) and a rustic fence. As usual, Sepia Saturday is bounteous with its potential themes. The theme image is from the collection of the National Media Museum on Flickr and was taken in the 1890s by the photographer Joseph Gale. It is entitled "Ninely and Nine" and if you want to know why you can read more about the image HERE. As always, all you need to do is to post your post on or around Saturday 7th May 2016 and add a link to the list below.

We are working our way towards the end of Marilyn's set of prompts (and the end of the theme within a theme whatever that was) and I am starting to put together the set of Sepia prompts for the next quarter (July - September 2016). For the first month, I have chosen old photographs from within my own collection and I am in the process of adding these to the Sepia Saturday Flickr Group site. I should have finished the five for July by next week so you may want to take a look (I will provide a link then for those who aren't already in the group). If you think it is a good idea, what I would rather like to do is to get a couple of volunteers who would add theme images from their own collections which would cover August and September. You would need to add the four images to the SS Flickr Group, make them copyright free and add a description. And remember, the images will need something within them that can be interpreted as prompts for Sepians. Have a think about it.

That is far too much thinking for one week, it is now time to be gathered safely in for Sepia Saturday 329. Baaa.

Sepia Saturday 328 : 30 April 2016

Our theme image for Sepia Saturday 328 - post your posts on or around Saturday 30 April 2016 and link to the list below - is a 1914 photograph from the Flickr Commons collection of the Dutch National Archives. The caption of the photograph is "The Great War. Refugees from Antwerp, Belgium, bringing a painting into safety. Belgium, 1914" As with all Sepia Saturday visual prompts, you are free to go in whichever direction you want when interpreting this theme: there is plenty of subject matter in there just waiting to be rescued.

And if you want to look ahead and see what is around the Sepia corner, here are the next two theme images.

So that is refugees, sheep and typesetters - who said there had been a hidden theme within the themes over the last few months! Whatever the theme within the theme within the theme might be, all you need to do is to rescue your own pictures from obscurity and post them on Sepia Saturday 328.

Sepia Saturday 327 : 23 April 2016

If you inhabit this part of the world you cannot fail to be aware that this Thursday marks the 90th birthday of the British Queen - Elizabeth II. To mark the event our theme image this week features a photograph from 1943 which shows Elizabeth and her sister Margaret as young women who performed in a pantomime production of Aladdin at Windsor Castle. The picture comes from the Daily Herald archives which are now held at the National Media Museum. You might want to go with a royal theme or you might want to go all republican and celebrate pantomimes, ninety, or even the story of Aladdin with all its intrigue and trickery to achieve royal succession. Whatever you go with, just post your posts on or around Saturday 23 April 2016 and add a link to the list below.

While we wait for the curtain to rise on our production, you might want to take a look at what lies ahead in the weeks to come.

Sepia Saturday 326 : 16 April 2016

This week on Sepia Saturday we have a series of portraits of a baby - what was known as a Polyfoto - in an image which dates back to 1930s and is part of the Flickr Commons stream of the National Media Museum. There are all sorts of things you can do with this theme - you don't need me to make any suggestions - I can think of 48 separate little ideas straight away. Whatever ideas you have, all you need to do is to post your posts on or around Saturday 16th April and link it to the list below.

Sepia Saturday 325 : 9 April 2016

Good gracious, I nearly missed the boat this week - it's already Thursday and the call for Sepia Saturday 325 is only just going up! Before you start stirring things up, before you start putting your oar in and muddying the water, let me say I have a decent excuse (and given a little time I will probably remember what it is). Whatever the reason for my poor performance, it's all water under the bridge now, it's time for a new start : so let's raise a flag for Sepia Saturday 325 (post your posts on or around Saturday 9th April 2016 and link to the Linky List below). The theme photograph comes from the collection of the British National Media Museum and features a boat carrying the Olympic Flag in 1948.
