Sepia Saturday 509 : Saturday 29 February 2020

Six people sat around a table and not a smile amongst them. Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week highlights that forgotten genre - the miserable photograph. Trawl through your archives looking for frowns, scowls, and black looks, and when you find them include them in a post on or around Saturday 29th February, and then add a link to the list below. The 29th of February is traditionally the day when ladies can propose marriage to men! Perhaps that gives an entirely new interpretation to our theme image!

Sepia Saturday 508 : Saturday 22 February 2020

By the time you read this I will be relaxing on a deckchair en board a ship taking a passage to Martinique. However my thoughts will not be on the wall-to-wall sunshine, the endless supply of jolly cocktails, and the gentle rhythm of a steel band: they will be on my Sepia friends throughout the world and their sepia challenge this week. All they have to do is to look at this week's theme image and post a post in response - on or around Saturday 22 February 2020 - featuring any old image they choose. All I will have to do is remember to wake up in time for pre-dinner drinks. It's a hard life!

It's time for a celebration, time for a little intimate dinner party. What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with a cosy little table for two .... hundred! Whenever there is something new on the scene, people want their photographs taking with them. Be it a car, be it a plane, an airship or a rocketship: people will crowd around to be pictured with it. If the real thing is not available, there is no need to worry: any self-respecting photographic studio will have a cardboard cut-out. This week on Sepia Saturday (post your posts on or around Saturday 8th February 2020) we are celebrating such photographs and asking you to share your own. Another week, another month, another archive, another place .... another Sepia Saturday prompt image. All our February Sepia Saturday prompt images come from the Flickr Commons collection of the archives of Liberas, the Belgian archive dedicated to preserving and managing the heritage of liberal organisations. Sepia Saturday 504 : Saturday 25 January 2020

The other day I took my grandson to the swings in the local park, and I suddenly remembered being taken to similar swings by my own father almost seventy years earlier. Swings, seesaws and roundabouts are the architecture of our childhood, and have been for a hundred years or more. Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week celebrates such architecture and provides us all with an opportunity to share old photographs of childhood. Sepia Saturday 503 : Saturday 18 January 2020

Few things can beat getting out into the fresh air and feeding the swans. It doesn't matter that, here in the northern hemisphere, it is in the middle of winter and the river is as likely to be frozen over as populated by a merry band of bobbing ducks and swans. It is the theme that we are celebrating, not the reality. That theme can be rivers, ducks, swans, bridges, ladies in pudding hats ... or the eternal connection between humans and animals. The theme photograph - like all the January theme photos - comes from my own collection of unknown and unclaimed old photographs. If there is a back story to it, it is the one you invent for yourselves. 

As usual, simply post an old photograph, which may (or may not) match the theme image, on or around Saturday 18th January 2020 and add a link to the list below. And if you have any time left, you might want to feed the swans .... or, alternatively, give a thought or two to the next couple of Sepia Saturday challenges.
