We are travelling through the highs and lows of September here on Sepia Saturday and our particular take on the theme this week is a low in several senses of the word. There is nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia here and there, nothing wrong with the good old days .... but sending men (and women and in many cases, children) deep underground to dig coal and other minerals for long hours in dangerous conditions for meagre wages could never be seen as one of the high points of human achievement. Our theme photograph dates back to 1905 and shows the No 3 Galt Mine in Alberta Canada where coal was extracted from the earth in huge quantities.
