Sepia Saturday 755 : Christmas and New Year 2024

Here it is, Merry Christmas. I'm not exactly sure which Sepia Christmas this is - it must be something like the fifteenth! Our monthly theme is still "Celebrations" which seems most suitable for the coming few days. You can share your old photographs at any point over the next couple of weeks, just add a link to the list below.

I thought we would start 2025 with a bit of a change so I am leaving behind the idea of monthly themes for the time being. Indeed, I am leaving behind the idea of themes - just feel free to share any old photograph you like. If you really do need a prompt, here are the next three Sepia Saturday headers - you can find whatever theme you want within them. And finally, a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and Happy New Year to you all.

Sepia Saturday 752 : 30th November 2024

Our "New Arrivals" month comes to an end with the arrival of a new wagon. For me, it's a bit of a special wagon as it was built by my Great Uncle Albert, but I accept that it is just another wagon to everybody else. It's the back-story that makes it special, its connection to history, its connection to my history. And that is what makes all our old photographs special; their back-story, their connections, their history. Share your special things here on Sepia Saturday by posting a post on or around Saturday 30th November 2024 and leaving a link on the list below. Before you jump in the cab and start the motor, take a look at what lies ahead for the rest of the year.

Sepia Saturday 751 : 23 November 2024

This month on Sepia Saturday it is all about arrivals and our theme image this week features a 1953 photograph of the great explorer and climber, Sir Edmund Hillary, arriving in Amsterdam. You can follow whichever train of thought you want - just let us have your photographic submissions to explore on or around Saturday 23rd November 2024. And before you set out, take a look at what Sepia Saturday has to offer for the rest of the year.

SEPIA SATURDAY 750 : 16 November 2024

Our theme this month on Sepia Saturday is "New Arrivals" and right in the middle of the month we have the 750th week of the internet meme that celebrates the very opposite of all things new and allows us to share our love of old photos. It is, however, possible to combine the two, to link new and old. Most collectors of old photographs know the thrill of the arrival of a new batch of old photographs. You can celebrate that, this week, or new discoveries, or new interpretations or - being Sepia Saturday which has battled against rules for 750 weeks now - anything you want as long as it is somehow linked to old photographs. Share your love of the old and the excitement of the new on or around Saturday 16th November 2024 and add a link to the list below. And leaving Sepia Saturday 750 behind us, we march on to Sepia Saturday 1,000 - here is a preview of the next couple of themes.

You can share your old photos of new arrivals on Sepia Saturday by posting them and linking them to the list below - on or around Saturday 9th November 2024. Next week (16th November) our Sepia Saturday new arrivals theme will continue but please note - THIS WILL BE THE 750th SEPIA SATURDAY!! Old friends and new might want to think about celebrating this milestone in a special way, perhaps reflecting on those special occasions when we get a new arrival of old photographs. Whatever the subject, be sure to join us then for our special celebration.

Sepia Saturday 748 : Saturday 2 November 2024

It's November on Sepia Saturday and our monthly theme is "New Arrivals". It is the most obvious interpretation for this theme that provides us with our prompt this week - babies. The arrival of a new baby in the family has been an occasion to bring out the camera for as long as people have been taking photographs. So give us your new arrivals on or around Saturday 2nd November 2024 and leave a link on the list below.

Sepia Saturday 747 : Saturday 26th October 2024

Two speed boys scootering away to who knows where! This photograph reminds us that special times don't have to be high-ticket affairs surrounded by champagne and glitter; special times can just as easily be when we are enjoying ourselves. This week on Sepia Saturday we are asking you to share such special times with the rest of the world. All you need to do is to share and old photograph of special times on or around Saturday 26th October 2024 and add a link to the list below. And then we can all scoot off into November when our Sepia Saturday theme will be "New Arrivals"

Sepia Saturday 746 : 19th October 2024

Our celebration of special occasions continues with a presentation. I have no idea what the presentation was for: a retirement; an arrival; a promotion; an achievement ... who knows. That is the thing about old photographs, they only tell part of a story leaving it to shared history - or vivid imagination - to fill in the blanks. Whatever the occasion, whatever the special time, we invite you to share your old photographs on or around Saturday 19th October 2024 and add a link to the list below.  Now let me present what is awaiting us on Sepia Saturday.

Sepia Saturday 745 : 12 October 2024

We are celebrating special times this month on Sepia Saturday and this week we have a celebratory cake. The photograph is from my own family collection but I must confess that I know neither what the occasion was, nor who the to ladies concerned were. It doesn't really matter, the image is a good one and it serves as an invitation to share your old photographs on (or off) the theme of Special Times. Share them by posting a post on or around Saturday 12th October and adding a link to the list below. And spare a moment to see what other special times are ahead of us.

Sepia Saturday 744 : 5th October 2024

October is our Special Times theme month here on Sepia Saturday. You can define "special times" in whichever way you want - our theme image this week is that very special time, a wedding - all you need is an old photograph to share. Share it on or around Saturday 5th October 2024 and add a link to the list below. Here is a preview of the other special times awaiting us this month.

Sepia Saturday 743 : 28th September 2024

We end our Highs and Lows month on something of a low - but if you are going to be low down deep under the ocean, you are best dressed in a divers' suit. Sometimes when we look through our collections of old photographs, we come across those that simply defy explanation. Why did Aunty Miriam get photographed rider a turkey, why did Uncle George dress up as an elephant .... why did the actress Sarah Bernhardt have her photograph taken with a man in a diving suit? So this week you can bring us your odd, your unexplained, your curious, your divers, your actresses, your whatever you want. Just bring them on or around Saturday 28th September 2024 and add a link to the list below. And then, whilst you are decompressing, take a look at what is in store in October.

Sepia Saturday 742 : 21st September 2024

We are having a month of highs and lows here on Sepia Saturday and this week is a high. We are high in the sky building a bridge over the River Tyne in Newcastle in the United Kingdom. If you want to follow the theme you could go with bridges, with rivers, or with working high in the sky. You can always choose to ignore the theme and go with any old photo you want. All we ask is that you post your post on or around Saturday 21st September 2024 and add a link to the list below. If you want to know what is on the other side of the sepia bridge - here's a look into the future.

Sepia Saturday 741 : 14th September 2024

We are travelling through the highs and lows of September here on Sepia Saturday and our particular take on the theme this week is a low in several senses of the word. There is nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia here and there, nothing wrong with the good old days .... but sending men (and women and in many cases, children) deep underground to dig coal and other minerals for long hours in dangerous conditions for meagre wages could never be seen as one of the high points of human achievement. Our theme photograph dates back to 1905 and shows the No 3 Galt Mine in Alberta Canada where coal was extracted from the earth in huge quantities. We are asking you to extract your old photographs from the bowels of your collection and share them with other lovers of old photographs on or around Saturday 14th September 2024 and add a link to the list below. Before you resume your mining activities, here is a reminder for what you should be looking for next.
