Sepia Saturday 652 : 17th December 2022

Our theme image for Sepia Saturday 652 depicts a radio communications officer surrounded by what at the time would be all the latest communications equipment. Our themes are therefore communications in their widest sense and all manner of technology and equipment. Or it can be radio or it can be ships: with Sepia Saturday, you can be as obtuse or creative as you like. Over and out.

And for next week-

As is traditional on Sepia Saturday, our Christmas theme image covers the two week festive period. Our theme image reflects traditions and Christmas, and what could be more traditional than cart loads of turkeys on their way to market! You can make of the theme image what you will, and follow it in any direction you choose. The only essential is that you all have the very best of a sepia Christmas time.

Sepia Saturday 651 : 10th December 2022

The only thing I know about this week's theme image was a single word written on the back of the photograph: "Granny". The photograph is one of the ones I have acquired from who knows where - old photographs are attracted to me like iron filings to a magnet - and therefore it is no granny of mine nor anyone that I know. But she looks like formidable lady, and therefore she is perfect for our Sepia Saturday theme for this week. So share your photos of grannies and formidable ladies on or around Saturday 10th December 2022 and add a link to the list below.

Sepia Saturday 650 : 3 December 2022

First of all, thanks for your thoughtful comments following on from last week's consultation. A lot of Sepia Saturdays have come and gone and I am sometimes guilty of forgetting what a great little group we have going here. I will spend a week or two weighing things up, but my gut-instinct is to say "Let's carry on until the last of us Sepia's finally curls up like an old print that has been handled too much" I want to go through your comments more carefully and see what we might change, what we might keep, and what we might introduce. I will get back to you with some suggestions, but until then it is business as usual.

Our theme image this week shows the original Sepia Saturday Executive Committee at the meeting that saw the launch of the blog, all those years ago. Take a look at those faces, work out who's who if you want, and decide what they make you think of. And that is your theme (if you want one). Whether you follow the theme or not, post your post on or around Saturday 3 December and add a link to the list below. And here is the next theme image, and I will add another one before the sun sets on another day.

SEPIA SATURDAY 649 : Saturday 26th November 2022

Our theme image this week says a number of things to me - the first and most important being that the Sepia Controller should read through the graphics he creates to make sure there are no spelling mistakes in there! Or maybe, he is being rather clever and one of the possible themes for you this week is mistakes in old photographs. It also makes me wonder whether we need suggested themes - does anyone follow them anymore? And, furthermore, it forces me to ask the question I have posed several times before - has Sepia Saturday run its course? Let me know your thoughts. As I have said before, as long as there is a demand for it, I will keep on running the blog and producing the weekly calls, but if you think time should now be called, fair enough.

Let me have your thoughts along with this week's Sepia Saturday submissions by adding any comments below and, of course, adding a link to the list below on or around Saturday 26th November 2022. Here are the next two theme images, just in case anyone is still wanting themes, but to avoid any further spelling mistakes, I will leave you to provide your own interpretations of the images.

Sepia Saturday 648 : Saturday 19 November

Oh look at that happy smiling face, the look which says I have just been bought a new fridge for Christmas! Modern housewives would probably, quite rightly, consign the loving husband who came up with such a present to the chill cabinet for 48 hours. Attitudes change and photographs all too often tell the story of changing attitudes. For our Sepia Saturday challenge this week you can go with fridges, with housewives, with adverts or with changing attitudes. Go with what you will, and go with it on or around Saturday 19th November 2022, and then link your post to the list below. And whilst you are chilling out, take a look at what is next on Sepia Saturday.

Sepia Saturday 647 : 12 November 2022

I'm not sure what my father was up to when he took the photograph which is this week's Sepia Saturday theme image. Throughout his life he was fond of motorbikes, so perhaps he was anxious to get the full curve of the front mudguard in the photograph. It matters not that my poor mother - not to mention the mill chimney behind her - were tilted at an angle of about 15 degrees! You can interpret this theme image in any way you want to - whatever interpretation you give, give it on or around Saturday 12th November 2022 and link your post to the list below. And if you tilt your head downwards, you may well get an advanced look at the next two theme images.

Sepia Saturday 646 : 5 November 2022

I would love to say that this call for submissions is late appearing because I have just come back from a world tour, a trip to view a glacier, or even fish and chips and an ice cream on a day trip to Blackpool, but, alas, that is not the case. It is late appearing because, yet again, I forgot - the inevitable results of having a sepia curator who is nearly as old as many of the photographs he is curating. It's better late than never - and at least - even though it is well after midnight here in darkest Yorkshire - I have still made the pre-Saturday deadline in the Americas. You can interpret this weeks theme image in any way you want, all you have to do is give us an old picture and some new thoughts on or around Saturday 5th November 2022, and link your post to the list below. The next two theme images will appear here first thing tomorrow morning, as soon as I wake up. Promise.

Sepia Saturday 645 : Saturday 29th October 2022

Just managed to get this up before Saturday dawned in the far side of the world. Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week features a group of naughty-looking schoolboys. Must do better. Proper preparation is the key to a successful life. If you keep leaving your homework until the last minute, you will grow up to run an internet group known throughout the world for the late publication of its weekly call for submissions. So let us have a old image and some new thoughts on or around Saturday 29th October 2022 and add a link to the list below. And while you are waiting to see the Headmaster, why not take a look at the next couple of theme images .... "Please Miss, I've only got one, my dog ate the other one!!!"

(The other one will follow as soon as the dog sicks it up)

Sepia Saturday 644 : Saturday 22 October 2022

Deckchairs, backyards and legs are amongst the potential themes for this week's Sepia Saturday. As always with Sepia Saturday, however, you are free to ignore both my interpretation of the theme image and, if you so desire, the theme image itself. Just share an old photograph on or around Saturday 22 October 2022 and link it to the list below. And whilst you are relaxing in your deck chair, you might want to see what comes next in Sepia Saturday.

Sepia Saturday 643 : 15 October 2022

I spent the day at the seaside the other day, forty or fifty miles further up the coast from Skegness where our theme photo was taken forty years ago. They still have stalls selling seaside rock (rock candy) and people still walk around with raincoats on to shelter them from the seaside breeze. As always, your task is to see what memories our weekly theme image evokes in you, and share those visual memories in a post which you have linked to the list below. And here are our next two theme images for you to think about in advance.

Sepia Saturday 642 : Saturday 8th October 2022

This week on Sepia Saturday we celebrate half-finished plans, projects started but not yet finished, works in progress - and all things rivers and bridges. And, as always, we also celebrate any interpretation you may choose to give to our Sepia Saturday theme image. Just post your post on or around Saturday 8th October and add a link to the list below.  While you are waiting for the bridge to open, you might want to take a look at what is on the other side of the sepia river.

Sepia Saturday 641 : Saturday 1 October 2022

Books, beards and checks suggest themselves as possible themes for Sepia Saturday 641 - but you might be able to find other possible influences in this week's Sepia Saturday theme image. Whatever theme you choose, or whatever theme of your own you adopt, just post your post on or around Saturday 1st October and add a link to the list below. And take a look at what is around the Sepia corner.

Thursday, 22 September 2022

Sepia Saturday 640 : 24 September 2022

Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week features a cyclist being presented with a trophy, so there are a whole range of potential theme images to choose from. Make your choice and post your post on or around Saturday 24th September 2022 and link it to the list below. And then free-wheel down the hill and check out our next couple of themes.

Sepia Saturday 638 : Saturday 10 September 2022

It's like waiting for a bus : you spend weeks waiting for one to come along and then three come along at the same time. So here are the next three image prompts for Sepia Saturday. This week it is the No, 638 we are waiting for which will take you to all places including queues, buses, raincoats, not to mention the fair city of London. Match the theme if you want, ignore it if you please. All you need to do is to get your submission linked to the list below on or around Saturday 10th September 2022. And whilst you are waiting for the next bus, you can have a look at the themes due in the next couple of weeks.

Saturday, 3 September 2022

Sepia Saturday 637 : 3 September 2022

Yet again I have forgotten to put the prompt up! Old age is catching up with me, which is quite appropriate for Sepia Saturday. So rather the wait for it to catch me, I’m catching a bus instead. You can join me by linking your sepia posts to the list below

Sepia Saturday 636 : 27 August 2022

A picture of a happy couple - my parent's-in-law as it happens. But there is a small child in the background making sure he gets into the picture. Today we call this "photobombing": the word may be new, but the action is far from being new. For Sepia Saturday this week you can feature examples of vintage photobombing, or feature couples, or feature whatever you choose. Just share an old photograph and add a link to the list below on or around Saturday 27 August 2022.  And whilst you are waiting for the child to get out of the way, take a look at the next couple of Sepia Saturday theme images.

Sepia Saturday 635 : 20 August 2022

"Stand still!". "Look, you've got to stand still or else the photograph will be all blurred!" "Right, that's it, I've warned you, where's that glue?" Maybe I'm exaggerating, and maybe this poor child's hand has not been glued to the chair, but photographers from years gone by went to extraordinary lengths to ket their subjects to keep still. For Sepia Saturday 635 (post your posts on or around Saturday 20th August) you can  move with movement, or babies, or chairs .... or whatever you want. As long as it's old and it's new, that';s all we want you to do .... other than add a link to the list below. And whilst you are keeping still, let your eyes explore the next couple of Sepia Saturday themes.

Sepia Saturday 634 : 13 August 2022

Digging through old photographs, looking for clues as to place, time or person, sifting for details that will illuminate a story - lovers of old photographs are a bit like archeologists - dealing with pictures rather than places. Our theme image this week is just a detail of a larger image, one I cut out of a magazine many moons ago. Sadly, I have lost the details of who took the photograph, but it is masterful. I've added a little colour and focussed on just three faces: I like to think of them as three faces in search of a back story. I could say that this week, on Sepia Saturday, we are celebrating how images can help us find stories - but that is what we do every week on Sepia Saturday. So bring along any image you like, bring along any story - and add it to the Sepia Saturday Collection. Post you post, add a link and away we go.

Next week we will be in search of more stories and more images and if you need a prompt - here it is.

Sepia Saturday 633 : 6 August 2022

For some reason that escapes me, the other evening we were looking up the definition of the word "vintage" and I was surprised to discover it was anything "more than twenty years old" Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week is over forty years old, so it must be verging on antique rather than vintage, and if that is the case, I must be positively prehistoric. The theme image to me suggest clothes and how they can be used to date photographs, but - as always with Sepia Saturday - you are free to wander down any byway of interpretation. All you need to do is to post a post on or around Saturday 6th August 2022 and add a link to the list below. And for those wanting to look what is around the corner - in a backwards direction, of course - here are the next theme images in line.
