Vintage Postcard by Living Picture Series Postcards : Collection of Alan Burnett |
Our theme image this week is a 1906 picture postcard which has the provocative caption "Proverbs : A girl unemployed is thinking of mischief". There are all sorts of directions you can take this theme in : there are postcards themselves, there are proverbs and there are men falling fast asleep whilst reading their newspapers. You can wander down the path that leads to the assumption that Edwardian women had little to do other than maintain a home, raise the children, and probably take in washing as well. Or you can always explore the fact that within ten years of this picture being published, women were maintaining the basic industries of many of the leading industrial nations. Whichever direction you take, simply post your post on or around Saturday 2 August 2014 and link it to the list below.
And whilst we are talking about housekeeping, I hope you will forgive me if I raise a Sepia Saturday housekeeping issue. This is not directed at established Sepians, people who know how Sepia Saturday works, but at people who are new to the Blog. We welcome contributions from people who have old and interesting images to share. Whilst the definition of what is "old" is a fairly relaxed one - images certainly don't have to be in sepia! - Sepia Saturday is not a site for new photographs or artwork. The Sepia gatekeepers reserve the right to remove links which appear to them to be merely linking to totally unrelated blog contact.
Now we have got that out of the way, let us have a look at what is around the Sepia corner:
240 : Criminals, ID Photos, Named Photos, False Pretences
241 : Writing and Letters
Back to this week. I want everyone working hard to get a good Sepia post; remember, a girl (or a boy) unemployed is thinking of mischief.
Alan, my apologies as I had linked recent photos to the #238 theme though I'd forgotten to add it to the links list. I guess it was the inspiration to kick start my blog posts again...will rephrase it tomorrow and only indirectly link to SS.
ReplyDeleteFirst again. Nothing like a proverb for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteMy effort is short as it had to be written between dips in the swimming pool. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right?
My postcard is about postcards and has an exchange between a man and a woman. It also refers to a paper and taking in something (but not washing).
ReplyDeleteThe act of tickling...or perhaps just the implement being used.
ReplyDeleteA teaser of a post.
ReplyDeleteLook what the postman brought me, back in 1954
ReplyDeleteMy dad and his shoe capers
ReplyDeleteDrunken mice making the most of the cat’s absence!
ReplyDeleteA set of charming French postcards from me this weekend with a special extra.
ReplyDeleteThe early worm catches the bird - here is my little contribution.
ReplyDeleteSit down, relax, and read your newspaper!
ReplyDeleteAnother repeat from me from a few yrs ago. Just seems appropriate with the theme :)
ReplyDeleteOthers have posted some great comic postcards but as usual I dip into the family past to try and explain a postcard sent for a girl's 12th birthday.
ReplyDeleteMischief - Freshly baked and hot off the production line.
ReplyDeleteOff theme unless you think maybe the images might work for travel postcards.
ReplyDeleteAnd I want to apologize for a few times when I have posted, but then not made it around to leave comments. An elderly father and a 16 year old dog with a brain tumor often have me stumbling through a day. I will try to do better.
My great-grandmother created mischief with her photos. Fun!
ReplyDeleteI found it hard to match the prompt this week but decided to relate a few anecdotes that my grandmother thought were funny.
ReplyDeleteI would like to be able to read and comment more on these posts but the blogspot posts simply won't load. This often happens.
