Sepia Saturday 236 : 12 July 2014

Back in the Good Old Days/Bad Old Days (*) when you went to the Barbers/Hairdressers (*) you would have a short back and sides/full perm and manicure (*) in a dirty little back street shop/smart beauty salon (*). Our theme image for Sepia Saturday 236 - post your posts on or around the 12th July 2014 - shows a lady enjoying a manicure whilst her hair is under the dryer at a salon on Eighth Street, New York in 1942. The photograph is by Marjory Collins and is part of the Flickr Commons stream of the Library of Congress. As far as possible themes are concerned, there is hair/beauty/nails/hair dryers/strange headgear (*). Just post your post and then link it to the list below - beautifully simple. Whilst you are waiting for your hair to dry you might want to browse through what is available over the next couple of weeks.

237 : Ballet Dancers, art, poses, chiffon

238 : Signs, big signs, small signs, men with their hands in their pockets

Now polish your nails/wave your hair/apply that sepia make-up (*) : it is time for Sepia Saturday 236.

(*) = strike out where appropriate

  1. Like everyone else I suspect, I don't normally like to be first, but I'm going on vacation so priorities dominate my mild adversity. :))

  3. I diverge, like the other path in the snowy wood. But I am playing sleuth as far as I can go with some family members in an old photo.

  4. I have a vintage postcard advertising permanent waves, and I found some interesting videos about 1950s beauty salons and hair care.

  5. I'm leaving town too - have to run and pack, but not my hair dryer. Isn't it great that most hotels provide these in every room? And how about those ironing boards - another great leap forward. We were pleasantly surprised recently in Japan where two pairs of pajamas came with every room. What next?

  6. Nothing sepia from me this week, but you can spot a hair dryer or two in my girls' wedding preparation photographs.

  11. Strange headgear is all I have to offer for this week's theme, but no doubt the wearer did not think it strange
