Sepia Saturday 213 : 1 February 2014

Suitcases mean holidays. Holidays mean photographs. Ergo, suitcases mean a good crop of sepia goodies. Out theme image for Sepia Saturday 213 - post your posts on or around Saturday 1st February 2014 - features an open suitcase. You can either go with the suitcase or you can ferret around inside it and find all sorts of possibilities. The actual image comes from an old advert for the Pacific Trunk Company which features in the Flickr Commons stream of the California Historical Society. For those new to Sepia Saturday what we are looking for is an old image (it doesn't have to be sepia) and a few words of description or explanation. Post your post and link back to the Sepia Saturday Blog and after it has been published try and visit as many other sepia participants as you can.

Before you pack your case, take a look at the next couple of Sepia Saturday themes :

214 :  A piano and a picture within a picture

215 : A postcard of Glasgow - a busy and crowded scene

You would have a problem fitting a piano or a tramcar into a suitcase, but if you are lucky enough to own a suitcase from the Pacific Trunk Co, it would appear that you can fit most other things in. Whatever you decide to pack, add a link to your post to the Linky List below.

  1. My original interpretation of the image was that the suitcase belonged to a traveling salesman due to the blank orders and business cards. I'm glad you mentioned holidays because I was able to come up with something about travel in general.

  2. I have just deleted three links which had been added to this weeks' Sepia Saturday. In each case the posts were nothing to do with either the Sepia Saturday concept in general or the theme in particular. Equally the people posting had not made any comments to explain their submissions. If the three blogs thus deleted would like to add any comment to justify their inclusion in Sepia Saturday they are most welcome to do so. I hope other Sepians agree with this approach, if not, please let me know. Alan

  3. I don't mind viewing ONE of the abstract pictures. But whoever is submitting them began with one submission at first. Then two. And now three, and never any explanation about them. Not sure where they're headed, but it would be nice to know what their idea is in posting the strangely beautiful but odd pictures that appear to have nothing to do with the idea of Sepia Saturday.

  6. I don't really care where they are going. It's not in the spirit of SEPIA Saturday. Delete.

  7. Take a lesson from me, renounce temptation now or pack your suitcase for a trip to purgatory.

  8. Hi, Alan -I completely support your decision to delete those posts. From me, another tale this week from my father's memories.

  9. Not a suitcase, but a precursor! And I'm all for the deletions, Alan -- thanks for taking that step!

  10. Thank you for the inspiration! My brief post, entitled 'The Emigrant's Suitcase', is about a little case that has become a treasure to me. As usual, my post will not appear until tomorrow.

    Cheers to all,
    Jennifer

  11. I have a story of two musical cases, one cold, and the other almost open and shut.

And I think we should always follow the Sepia Saturday motto, Alan. "What would Auntie Miriam do?"

  12. Not in holiday mood at all, and definitely not traveling salesmen. I’ve gone down the emigration route.

  13. If I’d seen them they’d have been deleted too Alan - no questions asked - they aren’t ‘playing the game’.

  14. Will show up here tomorrow, not with what I intended but something else that distracted me while looking for what I could not find..it's all about the journey isn't it? .I agree Alan.

  15. I'm not sure what are in my sepia suitcases but probably not whiskey or playing cards.

  16. Not as off-topic as I usually am, at least a railway station has a travel-related theme.

  17. My early toys. Included is a toy trunk and a book about traveling pigs - Gaston and Josephine.

  18. My post involves a trip I took as a young child with my Auntie Hannah. We visited an off the wall destination. The towel shop. The post card shown is one I mailed home almost 50 yrs. ago.

  27. It was a "battle" trying to find some baggage around here this week!

  28. I could not find any old photo of a suitcase - only of someone who did pack a lot of them in her day!

  29. Love this theme! After I'd already gotten started on the packable lunch meat theme, I started thinking of lots of other possibilities for this vintage suitcase theme! One vivid memory -- but not one I had a picture of, unfortunately -- was the traveling makeup case my mother used to have. A little bigger than a shoebox, it was hard-sided and square, had a mirror and a removable compartment. I don't remember her taking it with her to travel; she just used it to store makeup and lotion in. I found one similar to it when my oldest children were babies twenty-five years ago or so -- and used it to store all their little baby socks. Wonder what happened to that little traveling case?

  31. The photos do fit the luggage/travelling theme, though.
I'm beginning to doubt I'll ever quite catch up with my inherited collection of old family photos and postcards - at least not if trying to keep up some sort of life of "my own" as well :)
