As more and more people get their news from on-line sources, you could be forgiven for thinking that the days of the traditional newspaper are numbered. But go back just a few decades and those over-sized, finger-inking, arm-aching beasts were the way that we all found out what was happening in the world at large. My archive image this week dates from July 1969 and shows a group of avid newspaper readers. It comes from the Flickr Commons photostream of the Netherlands' Nationaal Archief. If you are theme-following this week you might care to go with newspapers or readers or benches; or you might want to focus on the specific event that was causing all that interest 44 years ago (is it really that long ago!). Wherever you choose to go, post your posts on or around Saturday 27 April 2013 and link them to the list below.
But before take-off, spare a moment to look at the next two Sepia Saturday theme images:
175 : I know we frown upon smoking now, but earlier generations were frequently photographed with a cigarette in their hands or mouths. If you have no smoking ancestors, there is always vending machines, golden flakes and black cats.
176 : A chemistry lesson takes us back to school for SS176. Schools were such important parts of all our lives and our collections are bound to feature some school-related photographs. Our theme image is bound to get a reaction!
That is for the future. It is time to get back to reading our newspaper and deciding what we are going to do for Sepia Saturday 174. Just take things one step at a time - one small step ...
Thought I would bring a splash of color for this week's post. Happy Sepia Saturday everyone!
ReplyDeleteNeed to get in early as its Anzac Day, April 25th.
ReplyDeleteWhich position do you prefer? I've covered a few in this week's post. I'm back for a week or two before going off on my travels again. Good to catch up.
ReplyDeleteMy post this week deals with getting children to read newspapers.

I'm back with some moon shots.
ReplyDeleteNot too far off topic from me this week
ReplyDeleteOnce again I'm taking just a touch of theme but going in a different direction.

ReplyDeleteCheers,

I finally found a picture that had SOMETHING to do with the picture of the theme of this week. Only slightly.
ReplyDeleteWell, somebody is reading.
ReplyDeletePark benches. That turned up some photographs.
ReplyDeleteI've got a Newspaper connection this weekend. Musical of course.
ReplyDeleteHave gone wildly off theme this week, but hope you still enjoy my little voyage.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the repeat. I had to fix the link.
ReplyDeleteHello, Friends!
ReplyDeleteI finally have a bit to time to participate again. I concentrated on the VW bus shown in the photo prompt.

No newspapers, straight to the moon for me.
ReplyDeleteNearly late, but not quite. I will call around and visit everyone, but not until I check the football results. I wonder how Leeds and Everton went on?
ReplyDeleteA tale of two newspaper addicts.
ReplyDeleteWow, reading a newspaper so close to traffic. This gave me bloggers block this week, but this photo I found saved the day and a bit appropriate.
ReplyDeleteBetter late than never...thanks for the great meme.
ReplyDeleteI'm finally in!
ReplyDeleteIt took a while for inspiration to strike but I've added my contribution.
