Bridges have always had symbolic meaning. When discussions were taking place on the design of the first Euro notes, it was decided that the common illustration on all denominations should be a bridge - to symbolise the joining together of people, communities, and nations. Our Sepia Saturday theme image this week is entitled "Rough Wooden Bridge Over River, Group With Dog on the Shore". It comes, via Flickr Commons, from the Phillips Glass Plate Negative Collection, at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia. The Museum provides no further information about where the bridge is, but the brilliance of on-line communities such as Flickr Commons (or, indeed, Sepia Saturday) is that such information is soon forthcoming : the footbridge was in Mosman Bay on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. The location of the photograph is not the only question posed by the title - it takes a sharp eye to spot the reported dog.

First??? Well, this is a new experience for me and I'm not altogether comfortable with being an early bird. We have lots going on every day for the next week, so my post would be now or never. I found this entire cast of characters provocative, in particular the dog's behind, if that bit in the lower right hand corner is the dog referred to in the title. Also, the pregnant? lady with the head covering is enigmatic.

Helen, I believe the dog in question is seemingly the extension of the legs of the fellow on the planks leading up to the bridge itself. You can just make out the head and tail!

ReplyDeleteI wonder how you got the spam essay. I was reading yesterday that more and more bloggers were having trouble with spam. I get a lot of it, but it's always caught by the filter.

Spam cleaned up. We have been subject to a big increase in spam attacks recently - about 20 or so spam messages a day to the Sepia Saturday site. The spam filters catch about 99% of them but the occasional one gets through and has to be deleted manually.

ReplyDeleteIf you look very very closely to my sepia photo contribution, you will not see a dog either. That's as close to the theme as I can get.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have noted a major increase in spam attacks this past month on my blog too. I restricted comments to "registered users" which I take to be real people to screen out those pesky anonymous web-robots. Apparently the purpose of their odd comments is to increase the number of internet search hits for the purveyor of whatever product or website has found an open comment blog.
