My featured archive image this week focuses on the Ipswich Cycle Club and dates back to the very beginning of the twentieth century. In case you are about to criticise me for a notable lack of geographic adventurousness, let me quickly assure you that the Ipswich concerned is the antipodean inception - just outside the city of Brisbane - rather than the one in Suffolk, England (or, for that matter, the one in Massachusetts, or the one in South Dakota). For the "themers" amongst us, they can seize on bicycles, or bare knees, general storekeepers, or even the multiple inceptions of Ipswich. For the "non-themers" (someone called us "memers" the other day and I rather like that) amongst us, they can go where the spirit takes them and post whatever old image they want to.

This photo captures the universal and perennial appeal of bikes. I am surprised how low the handle bars are for this time period. These are not ride in the park cruisers but racers?

Of course when I saw the word Ipswich I thought of the town 10 miles from here. Thanks for the clarification. I'm an avid biker. Those bikes are very much like today's mountain bikes. Interesting how those handlebars are designed. Those big seats must gave been comfortable! My post is early this week.

Over the next few weeks I'll be focusing on photos from the estate of a man named George Kallman from San Francisco. I know very little about him or his family, but upon his death his photos were unwanted by family members.

ReplyDeleteOh the bikes are having a rest before pedaled forward and onward! My post is something I've spent time pndering this week, it keeps me busy and amused.
ReplyDeleteI assumed that the theme was "wood" as there is a wooden building in the background and my twp ladies represent the theme in their own way.

ReplyDeleteA great period photo when bicycles could go as fast a horse or automobile. The braces are neat too. No bicycle theme for me either. Perhaps the theme could be selected a week before?
