Sepia Saturday 108 : 14 January 2012

I am not saying anything about my chosen old image for this week other than it is a still from the 1912 silent film "The New York Hat". The image comes courtesy of the Billy Rose Theatre Collection at the New York Public Library and, as always, via the magnificent Flickr Commons initiative. Other than that you can make of it what you will - pick your own themes, find your own prompts, follow you own cues. It is what you have all been doing so well for the last 107 weeks. All we ask is that your posts have some kind of old image within them, that you post them on or around Saturday the 14th of January 2012, that you add a link to your post  to the list below, that you link back to the Sepia Saturday Blog, and that you try and visit as many of the other participants as you can manage. What could be easier? It's a piece of cake. No it's not, it is a hat.

Hopefully, I won't be too "old hat."

A NYC hat! 75 years younger and it would have been the perfect addition to my SS107. You will be in NYC by the end of the decade with Amy and will have to stop into a haberdashery. J.J. Hat Center would be the perfect fit - established in 1811!

You never know what a woman is keeping under her hat.

I'm guessing this lady saw one of the feather's move and is now concerned it might be alive!

My mind is not on hats, but a salesgirl selling chocolate.

Hats off to you all.

A lovely bonnet, ‘with all the frills upon it’ set me off in a search to find the top of the Hat Parade!

Hello! Thank you for all the visits and lovely comments on LiM! I love looking at everyone's sites too!

This Saturday, I have a very interesting lady 'under my hat', as it were. I am *such* a fan of hats and can never pass up the opportunity to buy a photo of a lady with a really glamorous one!

Ah, classic movies. According to Wikipedia this 16 minute movie (directed by D.W. Griffith) is the best known example of Mary Pickford's early work. Nice theme!

There is a condensed version of the movie on YouTube:

The New York Hat (1912)

The Sepia Saturday prompt is at 4:33 in the video.

My grandmother sporting a hat on the lawn of Mt. Vernon. I've tried to post comments so many times in the past 24 hours and my comments just disappear.

Kat Mortensen said...

"Here's your hat, what's your hurry?" as my grandmother used to say.

A great theme choice this week. I'm glad others watched the original "New York Hat" film too. It helped me to decide for a bit of melodrama and half-fiction this time, so I'll take a girl and 1912.

I'm in this week. Couldn't resist it.

I couldn't find any beautiful hats like this one in my postcard collect so I wrote about beautiful Coast Guard stations and tonsils. Wow that's a stretch! Remember to open your mouth wide when you read my post. :)

Not having much luck with my blogspot lately, it won't let me comment as me (Rosie), I have to use Anonymous when I make a comment. Hope this works. Rosie

Ah, I found seven fabulous hats for your perusal!

Hrm, is it just me? I cannot seem to get this comment to post... This is my Google account but you will know me better as Who Were They?

She seems so shocked. Maybe I should watch YouTube to find out why.

People seem to be having difficulty commenting. I'll have to see if this works.

Wonderful - a levitating hat! I couldn't find anything so flamboyant but I found a skeleton story :-) PS: Couldn't leave a comment using my Wordpress for some reason. Jo

Sorry about the Comment problems : I think I need to change the settings.

I have changed the comment settings back to what they were - I would appreciate it if someone with Wordpress would try it now and report back.

I read Liz Stratton's post and just had to join in the fun. I've always admired the hats of my foremothers. Thanks for the prompt.

Alan Burnett said...

OK : Half-way through my reading. It is a bumper crop this week so my apologies to those lower down the list, it may be another day before I get to you.

Kristin said...

I visited every blog and posted on each one but on some of them my comments just disappeared. Very frustrating.

Alan Burnett said...

Kristin : I suspect it is something to do with this new embedded comment took Blogger has introduced. I have turned it off in my various blogs as it was leading to comments vanishing.

Apologies to all....since yesterday comments are not working on my blog and on many others who use blogger.com/ Apparently so the story (excuse) goes Blogger changed some coding and everything went to "h%$l" They claim they are working on it, but today it is still not fixed....Darn and double darn, nothing we can do

Unknown said...

Thanks to Bob Scotney for letting me know I had vanished from Alan's Linky (sounds kind of Kinky!)Sure enough where did I go, I was there and am not,,, anyway I am having trouble with Blogger not processing comments but some are getting through...take you chances and come on by to see my feathered hat ladies..now I should appear at the tail end....

A great topic. I am amazed at the size of the hats that appear in my photographs from an ordinary family.
